"SOMETHING IN THE WATER"

ALSTA IS BACK ON THE BIG SCREEN

Almost fifty years after the first screening of “Jaws”, Alsta comes back on the cinema screens in a new shark-infested, emotion-driven action thriller by British Film Director Hayley Easton Street. This time in a refreshingly all female-led plot.

"Something in the Water," stars Hiftu Quasem, Lauren Lyle, and Natalie Mitson, amongst others. The film turns a picturesque destination wedding into a desperate fight for survival, pushing five friends to confront their fears and navigate perilous waters.

This riveting drama revolves around Meg (Hiftu Quasem), who hesitantly attends her old friend Lizzie's (Lauren Lyle) wedding in the Caribbean. Along with her are friends Cam (Nicole Rieko Setsuko), Ruth (Ellouise Shakespeare-Hart), and her ex-partner Kayla (Natalie Mitson). The latter two share a traumatic history, adding another layer of complexity to their journey.

Set in a paradisiacal locale filled with palm trees, the film quickly pivots from a heartwarming reunion to a struggle for survival when a boat trip goes horribly wrong. The friends find themselves battling the elements, their relationships, and shark-infested waters. The screenplay, penned by Cat Clarke, masterfully balances tension, moments of sisterhood, and quick British humor.

The inspiration for "Something in the Water" stems from an unexpected love for sharks. Screenwriter Cat Clarke, an ardent shark enthusiast since her childhood, aimed to craft a shark movie with an emotional twist. The result is a female-led, tension-filled narrative that intertwines elements of survival, friendship, humor, and environmentalism.

Producer Julie Baines was captivated by the film's visual potential and the emotional journey each character embarks on. She appreciated how the characters were fully fleshed out, subverting the usual tropes of survivalist thrillers.

Directed by Hayley Easton Street, a filmmaker known for her work on franchises like Star Wars and DC’s Justice League, the film brings a unique perspective to the genre. Easton Street, like Clarke, shares a keen interest in sharks, making her an ideal match for the project.

With a cast that embodies the intricate relationships and isn't afraid of facing challenges, "Something in the Water" was filmed in the Dominican Republic over six weeks. Despite weather disruptions and personal challenges (screenwriter Cat Clarke found out to be prone to seasickness as soon as she boarded the filming boat), the cast and crew pulled together to create a realistic and gripping representation of survival.

The film strikes a balance between moments of horror and heartfelt reconnections. It's a visceral journey that puts the audience right in the heart of the action. "Something in the Water" is a film for fans of survivalist thrillers, action blockbusters, and stories of female friendships. It's an unforgettable dive into the depths of fear, resilience, and the strength of bonds formed in extreme circumstances.

Alsta is proud to be part of this production and to inspire fans and cinemagoers during this action packed thriller.
