In Steven Spielberg’s Jaws(1975), the Orca—the weathered fishing boat captained by Quint—was more than a backdrop. It was the setting for the film’s final act, and the space where its central characters were most tested. The boat, stripped back and exposed, had a presence of its own: practical, mechanical, and quietly iconic.
At Alsta, the Orca’s design language and symbolism continue to resonate. Two of our watch accessories—the Hooper bracelet and the Orca rubber strap—draw direct inspiration from this vessel. Their shared design feature, a distinctive series of round perforations, echoes the Orca’s most recognisable physical detail: its portholes.
THE HOOPER BRACELET: AN ORIGINAL REFERENCE POINT
First introduced with the Superautomatic, the Hooper bracelet incorporates a distinctive series of circular cutouts, directly inspired by the portholes on the Orca boat in Jaws. Executed in brushed stainless steel, this design detail brings a sense of structure and intent to the bracelet—functional, but rooted in something more specific. It’s a restrained nod to the film’s utilitarian aesthetic, carried into a piece of modern watchmaking.
THE ORCA STRAP: THE REINTERPRETATION IN RUBBER
That same design language carries through to the Orca strap—a flexible silicone alternative offered across the Alsta collection. While softer in material and silhouette, the strap echoes the porthole motif through its rounded perforations, creating a clear visual link to the bracelet. Finished with a steel Alsta-signed buckle, the strap offers a different expression of the same idea: form shaped by reference, built with purpose.
